One of the bands in Prince's Paisley Park sphere, Mazarati, requested him for a song, Prince quickly whipped up an acoustic bluesy demo for them.

To the dismay of his label, Mazarati added a funk rhythm, but Prince was wise enough to take the song back, keeping some of producer David Z's arrangements and the band's backing vocals but dropping the bass line.

But Prince had the authority at that time to say, 'That's the single and you're not getting another one until you put it out.' The rest, as Z said in an interview, is history. His career was completely revived by that song, and a year later Warner Bros. was looking to sign artists that sounded similar.

It was the lead single from his eighth studio album, Parade in 1986 and it was a No. 1 hit worldwide, holding the top spot of the US Billboard.
