Song meaning of Gloria by Laura Branigan, and what it is about
The contagious spirit and thrilling energy of Laura Branigan's "Gloria" are rare in other songs. This throbbing dance-rock hit, which was the lead single from Branigan's debut album and was released in 1982, shot to the top of charts all over the world, propelling her to prominence.
"Gloria" came into being during a turning point in Branigan's professional life. Producer Jack White noticed that the song, with its captivating melody and driving beat, had the ability to attract audiences. Originally composed and sung by Italian vocalist Umberto Tozzi. Together with Branigan, White gave the song a new, vibrant sound that would ultimately come to symbolise the spirit of 1980s pop music.
"Gloria" is really an anthem of empowerment and emancipation, reflecting the joy and excitement that result from letting go of restrictions and accepting one's actual self. The song's lyrics discuss the thrill of discovering oneself and the thrilling rush of having gained freedom.
Laura Branigan's version was even more popular than Umberto Tozzi's original in several countries; for example, it peaked at number one in Germany while the original Italian version was only ranked number two.
Song Lyrics of Gloria by Laura Branigan
Gloria, you're always on the run now
Running after somebody, you gotta get him somehow
I think you've got to slow down before you start to blow it
I think you're headed for a breakdown. So, be careful not to show it
You really don't remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're falling?
If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody calling?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line
Oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria)
But you really don't remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
A-ha-ha, a-ha-ha, Gloria, how's it gonna go down?
Will you meet him on the main line, or will you catch him on the rebound?
Will you marry for the money, take a lover in the afternoon?
Feel your innocence slipping away, don't believe it's comin' back soon
And you really don't remember, was it something that he said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
Gloria, don't you think you're falling?
If everybody wants you, why isn't anybody calling?
You don't have to answer
Leave them hangin' on the line
Oh-oh-oh, calling Gloria
Gloria (Gloria), I think they got your number (Gloria)
I think they got the alias (Gloria) that you've been living under (Gloria)
But you really don't remember, was it something that they said?
Are the voices in your head calling, Gloria?
(Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria)
(Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria, Gloria)
