Les Yeux Sans Visage (Eyes Without a Face), a 1960 French film, was one of the horror movie names that Idol mentioned in his memoir Dancing with Myself. In an attempt to restore his daughter's beauty, the plastic surgeon in the film murdered people and used their facial features to transplant onto his daughter. The daughter had suffered facial disfigurement in an automobile accident. She ended up with just her eyes—"eyes without a face"—remaining of her former visage. Idol saw some similarities between the moral decline he witnessed while residing in New York during the 1980s and the film.

Idol added a rap and it was all over the discos and clubs in New York at the time. Idol claimed he improvised some rap lines over the riff.

It became the first of Idol's top-10 hits in the US, peaking at No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
