Song Meaning of Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley

The song is about a dishonest and broken relationship and how the characters must get above their problems to keep it going. Mark James, who also co-wrote "Always on My Mind" (which Presley would eventually record), wrote the song in 1968. James had affections for his childhood sweetheart, who was married back in Houston, even though he was married at the time to his first wife. James' wife had misgivings about his emotional state. He said that the situation was confusing for him and that the three people were "caught in this trap that they could not walk out of."

Presley was "caught in a trap" when producer Chips Moman gave him this song in 1969; as the song's lyrics put it, he was being milked dry by his label and associates.

That may be the reason why, despite the fact that it had failed to chart for singer-songwriter Mark James in 1968, Presley was confident he could make the song a deep soul smash.

The final Number One song of his career, "Suspicious Minds," was recorded between four and seven in the morning at the historic Memphis session that helped the King reclaim his throne.

Suspicious Minds lyrics by Elvis Presley

We're caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see

What you're doing to me

When you don't believe a word I say?

We can't go on together

With suspicious minds

And we can't build our dreams

On suspicious minds

So, if an old friend I know

Stops by to say hello

Would I still see suspicion in your eyes?

Here we go again

Asking where I've been

You can't see these tears are real

I'm crying

(Yes, I'm crying)

We can't go on together

With suspicious minds

And we can't build our dreams

On suspicious minds

Oh let our love survive

I'll dry the tears from your eyes

Let's don't let a good thing die

When honey, you know I've never lied to you

Mmm yeah, yeah

We're caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Why can't you see

What you're doing to me

When you don't believe a word I say?

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap

I can't walk out

Because I love you too much baby

Oh, don't you know

I'm caught in a trap
