Song meaning of Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode, and what it is about
The song Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode was inspired by the book Elvis and Me by Priscilla Presley, according to songwriter Martin Gore:
'It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis Presley was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships; how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?'
Advertisements with the wording "Your own personal Jesus" appeared in the personal columns of UK regional newspapers before to its debut. Afterwards, a phone number to hear the song could be heard on the advertisements. One of Depeche Mode's biggest hits, the song rose to No. 13 on the UK charts as a result of the controversy that followed.
Lyrics of Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown and you're all alone
Flesh and bone by the telephone
Lift up the receiver, I'll make you a believer
Take second best, put me to the test
Things on your chest you need to confess
I will deliver, you know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who cares
Your own personal Jesus
Someone to hear your prayers
Someone who's there
Feeling unknown and you're all alone
Flesh and bone by the telephone
Lift up the receiver, I'll make you a believer
I will deliver, you know I'm a forgiver
Reach out and touch faith
Your own personal Jesus
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
Reach out and touch faith
(Reach out, reach out)
Reach out and touch faith
