At the age of 25, Doug Fieger met Sharona Alperin, a young woman aged only 17, who would later become his girlfriend for the following four years and spark a two-month songwriting spree.

"I fell in love with her instantly," Fieger recalled, "it was like getting hit in the head with a baseball bat." As soon as that occurred, something in me was awakened, and I quickly began creating a bunch of songs furiously. The song's structure and melody were developed by Fieger and Averre.

Fieger intended the song to be a clear statement of his sentiments, and although Averre initially objected to include Alperin's name in it, she eventually gave in.

Fieger asserted that "My Sharona" was written in 15 minutes, and that the song was recorded in one take (without background vocals) and then supposedly mixed in another 15 minutes. Although they were once engaged, Fieger and Alperin never wed.

Fieger said in a 2005 interview that they remained "great friends" and that she routinely visited him as he battled cancer. After that, Alperin enjoyed a prosperous career as a realtor in Los Angeles.
