Juice Wrld said the song was intended to be a "therapy session" during a time when he was having relationship issues in a June 2018 interview with Lyrical Lemonade.

Sting controlled 85% of the rights to "Lucid Dreams," which includes an adaptation of his 1993 song "Shape of My Heart," according to producer Nick Mira, who made the revelation in 2018.

Members of the now-defunct pop punk band Yellowcard filed a $15 million lawsuit against Juice Wrld in October 2019 alleging that "Lucid Dreams" plagiarised the melody of their song "Holly Wood Died." A "deadline for defendants to respond to the lawsuits" was extended by the group after Juice Wrld passed away on December 8, 2019.

The song, which was produced by Nick Mira, made its Billboard Hot 100 debut at position 74 and reached its highest position there at position 2.
