Song Meaning of Last Christmas by Wham

In 1983, while George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley were visiting Michael's parents, "Last Christmas" came into being. Michael wrote it in his bedroom as a child. "Last Christmas" is a song that Michael played Ridgeley the opening and chorus of; Ridgeley described it as "a moment of wonder" thereafter.

The song was recorded at London, England's Advision Studios during the summer of 1984. Every instrument on the song was written, composed, produced, and played by George Michael. Michael had "plastered [the studio] in Christmas decorations to set the mood".

This song is less about the actual Christmas season and more on the singer's concerns about his ex-lover and a failed romance.

Since the song's first release, other artists have covered it, including Backstreet Boys, Jimmy Eat World, Taylor Swift, and Ariana Grande.

Outside of the UK, the song climbed in the top ten of charts in a number of countries, including Australia, Canada, and the US, and topped the charts in Denmark, Germany, Ireland, Slovenia, and Sweden. It was the UK's most-played Christmas song of the twenty-first century until "Fairytale of New York" surpassed it in 2011.

Lyrics of Last Christmas by Wham

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

But the very next day you gave it away

This year

To save me from tears

I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

But the very next day you gave it away

This year

To save me from tears

I'll give it to someone special

Once bitten and twice shy

I keep my distance

But you still catch my eye

Tell me, baby

Do you recognize me?

Well, it's been a year

It doesn't surprise me

I wrapped it up and sent it

With a note saying "I love you"

I meant it

Now I know what a fool I've been

But if you kissed me now

I know you'd fool me again

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

But the very next day you gave it away

This year

To save me from tears

I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

But the very next day you gave it away

This year

To save me from tears

I'll give it to someone special

Oh, oh, baby

A crowded room

Friends with tired eyes

I'm hiding from you

And your soul of ice

My god, I thought you were someone to rely on

Me? I guess I was a shoulder to cry on

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart

A man under cover, but you tore me apart

Now I've found a real love. You'll never fool me again

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

But the very next day you gave it away

This year

To save me from tears

I'll give it to someone special

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

But the very next day you gave it away

This year

To save me from tears

I'll give it to someone special

A face on a lover with a fire in his heart

I gave you my heart

A man under cover, but you tore him apart

Maybe next year I'll give it to someone—

I'll give it to someone special

Special

Someone

Someone

I'll give it to someone—

I'll give it to someone special

Who give me something in return

I'll give it to someone—

Hold my heart and watch it burn

I'll give it to someone—

I'll give it to someone—

I'll give it to someone special

I thought you were here to stay

How could you love me for a day

I thought you were someone special

Gave you my heart

I'll give it to someone—

I'll give it to someone—

Last Christmas

I gave you my heart

You gave it away

I'll give it to someone—

I'll give it to someone—
