Song meaning of Iris by The Goo Goo Dolls, and what it is about

Co-producer Bob Cavallo and his son Rob Cavallo, who is also a music producer, made the decision to write a soundtrack for the movie City of Angels. Rob selected the Goo Goo Dolls, and Bob took Alanis Morissette. Lead singer Rzeznik described the composition process of the song in a 2013 interview with Songfacts:

For the film City of Angels, co-producer Bob Cavallo and his son Rob Cavallo, also a music producer, decided to create a movie soundtrack. Bob took Alanis Morissette whilst Rob took the Goo Goo Dolls. In a 2013 interview with Songfacts, lead singer Rzeznik explained how he wrote the song:

"I was thinking about the situation of the Nicolas Cage character in the movie. This guy is completely willing to give up his own immortality, just to be able to feel something very human. And I think, 'Wow! What an amazing thing it must be like to love someone so much that you give up everything to be with them.' That's a pretty heavy thought."

After seeing Iris DeMent's name in a performance listing in the LA Weekly newspaper, Rzeznik decided to name the song after the country folk singer-songwriter.

Number one in Australia, Canada, and Italy, number three in the UK, and number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 were all attained by the power ballad. The iconic song "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls has won praise from critics.

Iris lyrics by The Goo Goo Dolls

And I'd give up forever to touch you

'Cause I know that you feel me somehow

You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be

And I don't wanna go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment

And all I can breathe is your life

When sooner or later it's over

I just don't wanna miss you tonight

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming

Or the moment of truth in your lies

When everything feels like the movies

Yeah, you bleed just to know you're alive

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And I don't want the world to see me

'Cause I don't think that they'd understand

When everything's made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am
