Song Meaning of Hey Soul Sister by Train, and what it is about
Train's highest-charting single to date, the song peaked at number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 2010, it became the best-selling song on the iTunes Store and the second best-selling song in the US overall.
Pat Monahan, lead singer of Train, opted to record another song with the Norwegian production duo Espionage after working with them on the writing and recording of "Brick by Brick".
Monahan desired a song that was more INXS-like. They began to play a song that sounded a lot like INXS, to which he composed the melody and lyrics for "Hey, Soul Sister," which he then began to sing. However, it doesn't sound very good. Taking up a ukulele, one of the guys asked, "Hey, how about this?" And that's what changed. The lyrics began to dance. It was logical. These were not intended to be played on a guitar, but rather a ukulele.
At first, I tried to do it by using a guitar pick, and it didn't sound right. I had to go online and Google a ukulele lesson and noticed they're not using picks at all; it's more of a flamenco style. Once I got that down, then it sounded like the real deal. —Lead guitarist Jimmy Stafford, on having to learn to play ukulele as requested by lead singer Patrick Monahan in the recording of "Hey, Soul Sister"
Hey Soul Sister lyrics by Train
Hey
He-e-e-e-ey
He-e-e-e-ey
Your lipstick stains
On the front lobe of my left-side brains
I knew I wouldn't forget you
And so I went and let you blow my mind
Your sweet moonbeam
The smell of you in every single dream I dream
I knew when we collided
You're the one I have decided who's one of my kind
Hey, soul sister
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo?
The way you move ain't fair, you know
Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do
Tonight
Hey
He-e-e-e-ey
He-e-e-e-ey
Just in time
I'm so glad you have a one-track mind like me
You gave my life direction
A game-show love connection we can't deny
I'm so obsessed
My heart is bound to beat right out my untrimmed chest
I believe in you, like a virgin, you're Madonna
And I'm always gonna wanna blow your mind
Hey, soul sister
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo?
The way you move ain't fair, you know
Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do
Tonight
The way you can cut a rug
Watching you's the only drug I need
So gangster, I'm so thug
You're the only one I'm dreaming of, you see
I can be myself now finally
In fact, there's nothing I can't be
I want the world to see you'll be with me
Hey, soul sister
Ain't that Mr. Mister on the radio, stereo?
The way you move ain't fair, you know
Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do tonight
Hey, soul sister
I don't wanna miss a single thing you do
Tonight
Hey
He-e-e-e-ey
He-e-e-e-ey
Tonight
Hey
He-e-e-e-ey
He-e-e-e-ey
Tonight
