Brown and his composition group, the Graffiti Artists (Rob Allen and Andre Merritt), wrote the song. He claimed that Polow da Don made a rhythm as soon as he entered the studio, and Brown wrote to it. The group "wanted to give it that other side of crossover, and go a little bit to that pop realm," because the producer's approach was "more of a European, techno, house-type feel."

He used autotune to record the song, just like he did for one of his earlier songs, "Kiss Kiss."

The song "Forever" is actually an expanded version of a Doublemint gum commercial jingle that was commissioned by a marketing firm working for Wrigley. Brown first wrote the brief version for the ad, then expanded it into a full song during a recording session that was commissioned by the gum manufacturer in February 2007.

The song peaked in the top ten in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States, as well as at number one in Ireland and New Zealand. In Germany, Switzerland, and Denmark, it also made the top forty.
