Song Meaning of Don't Start Now by Dua Lipa, and what it is about
Lyrically, Lipa extols her independence and tells an ex-boyfriend to put their relationship in the past.
The same writers who worked with Dua Lipa to create her 2017 single "New Rules" created "Don't Start Now": Caroline Ailin, Emily Warren, and Ian Kirkpatrick. Kirkpatrick wrote the song in response to Joe Kentish's challenge to replicate the success of "New Rules" in late 2018 as the A&R head at Lipa's record company Warner Records.
After Warren invited Ailin and Kirkpatrick to her home in Wyoming to attend a disco event where music including Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" (1978) was played, the first composing session took place.
The following morning, they decided to write a disco song because "it's the most fun to dance to" as a result of that evening. The basic idea for the song was inspired by Ailin's sense of obligation to her former after their relationship. In addition, Kirkpatrick collaborated with producer J Kash to find the song's sound, which evolved into a back-and-forth between disco and 1980s music.
The song received nominations for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards. On both the UK Singles Chart and the US Billboard Hot 100, the song reached at number two.
Don't Start Now lyrics by Dua Lipa
If you don't wanna see me
Did a full one-eighty, crazy
Thinking 'bout the way I was
Did the heartbreak change me? Maybe
But look at where I ended up
I'm all good already
So moved on, it's scary
I'm not where you left me at all, so
If you don't wanna see me dancing with somebody
If you wanna believe that anything could stop me
Don't show up, don't come out
Don't start caring about me now
Walk away, you know how
Don't start caring about me now
Aren't you the guy who tried to
Hurt me with the word "goodbye"?
Though it took some time to survive you
I'm better on the other side
I'm all good already
So moved on, it's scary
I'm not where you left me at all, so
If you don't wanna see me dancing with somebody
If you wanna believe that anything could stop me
(Don't, don't, don't)
Don't show up, don't come out
Don't start caring about me now
Walk away, you know how
Don't start caring about me now ('Bout me now, 'bout me)
Up, up
Don't come out, out, out
Don't show up, up, up
Don't start now (Oh)
Up, up
Don't come out, out
I'm not where you left me at all, so
If you don't wanna see me dancing with somebody
If you wanna believe that anything could stop me
Don't show up (Don't show up), don't come out (Don't come out)
Don't start caring about me now ('Bout me now)
Walk away (Walk away), you know how (You know how)
Don't start caring about me now (So)
Up, up
Don't come out, out, out
Don't show up, up, up
Walk away, walk away (So)
Up, up
Don't come out, out, out
Don't show up, up, up
Walk away, walk away, oh
