Song Meaning of Dancing On My Own by Robyn, and what it is about

Swedish disco diva Robyn perfectly encapsulated the pain and joy of spinning around in circles on the dance floor by yourself for a brief period of solitary success.

She subsequently reflected on the song's inspiration: "I think 'Dancing on My Own' is totally from me just being in clubs and going out and dancing a lot, and seeing people and thinking, 'What are they doing here?'" Lyrically, Robyn's turbulent engagement to Olof Inger, a Swedish MMA fighter and modern visual artist, was beginning to fray while she went deep into recording sessions during the winter of 2009. Robyn, "tired of the broken heart," went back to write about "sad love," a subject that continued to inspire her with new ideas despite remaining a common theme in her writing since it was so universal.

The song, which Robyn co-wrote with Stockholm producer Patrik Berger, cemented her status as a cult classic. But it also served as a model for an entire generation of young singers, from Taylor Swift to Lorde, who were searching for the perfect blend of glitter and sobs. Lorde declared, "To me, this song is perfect." "Joyous even when your heart is breaking."

Song Lyrics of Dancing On My Own by Robyn

Somebody said you got a new friend

Does she love you better than I can?

There's a big black sky over my town

I know where you're at, I bet she's around

Yeah, I know it's stupid

I just gotta see it for myself

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh

I'm right over here, why can't you see me, oh

I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, oh

I keep dancing on my own

I keep dancing on my own

I'm just gonna dance all night

I'm all messed up, I'm so out of line

Stilettos and broken bottles

I'm spinning around in circles

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh

I'm right over here, why can't you see me, oh

I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, oh

I keep dancing on my own

I keep dancing on my own

So far away but still so near

The lights go on, the music dies

But you don't see me standing here

I just came to say goodbye

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh

I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, oh

I keep dancing on my own

I keep dancing on my own

I'm in the corner, watching you kiss her, oh

I'm right over here, why can't you see me, oh

I'm giving it my all, but I'm not the girl you're taking home, oh

I keep dancing on my own

I keep dancing on my own

I keep dancing on my own
