Song meaning of Angels by Robbie Williams, and what it is about

In 2011, Robbie Williams claimed that he and Guy Chambers wrote the song "Angels" in 25 minutes while thinking about his aunt and uncle. According to his version, the chorus was written as he and Chambers were sitting outside a cafe and admiring a water fountain. It was the first song Williams and I composed together, she stated in 2016. We knew we had something very special, and we hoped and prayed for it. Williams complained that several people believed Chambers was the only author.

The first draft of "Angels" was allegedly written by Irish singer-songwriter Ray Heffernan in Paris in 1996 following his partner's miscarriage, according to Heffernan. Heffernan claims that he happened to run into Williams by accident at a Dublin pub. He played him a rough cut of the song, and the following week the two collaborated to record a studio demo. Williams acknowledged recording a demo with Heffernan, but he claimed to have considerably changed the song with Chambers.

Heffernan agreed to the purchase of the rights from Williams's management for £7,500 before the song's release. In the UK CD single liner notes, he is thanked.

Williams said: "We could have gone to court, and it all would have been down to whether what way the judge wakes up that day out of bed ... So I gave him some money, and he went away." In 2011, Heffernan said: "For a long time, I was angry about this, but as you get older you see things differently ... The 'Angels' connection has opened doors to publishing companies and earned me a few quid."

Angels lyrics by Robbie Williams

I sit and wait

Does an angel contemplate my fate?

And do they know the places where we go

When we're grey and old?

'Cause I've been told

That salvation lets their wings unfold

So when I'm lying in my bed

Thoughts running through my head

And I feel that love is dead

I'm lovin' angels instead

And through it all

She offers me protection

A lot of love and affection

Whether I'm right or wrong

And down the waterfall

Wherever it may take me

I know that life won't break me

When I come to call

She won't forsake me

I'm lovin' angels instead

When I'm feeling weak

And my pain walks down a one-way street

I look above

And I know I'll always be blessed with love

And as the feeling grows

She breathes flesh to my bones

And when love is dead

I'm lovin' angels instead

And through it all

She offers me protection

A lot of love and affection

Whether I'm right or wrong

And down the waterfall

Wherever it may take me

I know that life won't break me

When I come to call

She won't forsake me

I'm lovin' angels instead

And through it all

She offers me protection

A lot of love and affection

Whether I'm right or wrong

And down the waterfall

Wherever it may take me

I know that life won't break me

When I come to call

She won't forsake me

I'm lovin' angels instead
