After the success of her 1993 best-selling album Music Box, Carey’s then husband Tommy Mottola suggested that she record a Christmas album. She agreed and began decorating her New York City home with festive lights and ornaments while working on ideas for the project.

Songwriters Carey and Walter Afanasieff crafted the chords, structure, and melody of All I want for Christmas is you in less than an hour. A lush bed of keyboards reminiscent of producer Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, a soulful vocal chorus, robust oohs, tension-creating counter-melodies and festive harmonies rounded out the track to create a merry classic.

The song also became the first holiday hit to achieve Diamond status, the highest tier of Gold and Platinum awards, making it one of the most successful songs in music history. A children’s book was even released based on the track.
