"Sorry" is a request for a second chance to make amends to a lover, with Bieber pleading for forgiveness. Since then, Bieber has claimed that Selena Gomez was the lover.

Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels, along with producer Michael Tucker working under the name BloodPop, came up with the song "Sorry" at the recording studio.

Tranter and Michaels contributed to the song's lyrics, and Tucker was in charge of writing the music. Michaels and Tranter, who had already collaborated on a few tracks and had established themselves as songwriting partners, were requested to join Tucker in a session. While Michaels was in a voice booth with Tranter and the word "sorry" "popped out" of her head, she recounted, Tucker wrote the song's tune with Bieber in mind.

They then wrote the song's lyrics, which were influenced by a personal experience Michaels had, delivered the demo to Justin Bieber's team, who loved it and "changed a couple things to make it feel more like him."

The song topped the charts of thirteen countries.
