Song Meaning of Blurred Lines by Robin Thicke, and what it is about

According to Thicke, the song's lyrics are about his ex-wife Paula Patton.

The song "Blurred Lines" was co-written by American artists Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke over the course of a three-day period in the summer of 2012. Williams originally began to play a two-chord progression and a simple funk rhythm with synchronised cowbell accents on the drums. It evolved into the axis of the track.

Thicke composed a melody on the spot and wrote lyrics about enticing the girlfriend of another man. Both singers finished recording and finishing the song in an hour and a half. Rapper T.I was selected by Thicke and Williams because they wanted a rapper from the Southern United States to appear in the song.

Thicke told Howard Stern during an interview on his Show that "Blurred Lines" was inspired by his ex-wife Paula Patton. He said: "My wife is Mrs. Good Girl, but gradually over our marriage, I've turned her into a bad girl."

Bridgeport Music and the family of American artist Marvin Gaye engaged in a legal battle over the song, claiming it violated the copyrights to Gaye's 1977 single "Got to Give It Up" and violated their copyrights. A federal jury found Williams and Thicke responsible for copyright infringement in March 2015; as a result, Gaye's estate received posthumous songwriting credit based on the royalties that were guaranteed to his benefit.

Music critics gave the song generally unfavourable reviews; some even claimed that it glorified rape culture.

In terms of sales, the song topped the charts in 25 nations and peaked at number five in another six. The longest-running single in 2013 in the US, "Blurred Lines" spent 12 straight weeks at the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It became one of the all-time best-selling songs, shattering the previous record for the biggest radio audience.

Blurred Lines lyrics by Robin Thicke

[Pharrell & Robin Thicke:]

Everybody get up

Everybody get up

[Robin Thicke:]

If you can't hear what I'm tryna say

If you can't read from the same page

Maybe I'm going deaf

Maybe I'm going blind

Maybe I'm out of my mind

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

[Robin Thicke:]

OK, now he was close

Tried to domesticate you

But you're an animal

Baby, it's in your nature

Just let me liberate you

You don't need no papers

That man is not your maker

And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl

[Robin Thicke:]

I know you want it

I know you want it

I know you want it

You're a good girl

Can't let it get past me

You're far from plastic alright

Talk about getting blasted

I hate these blurred lines

I know you want it

I know you want it

I know you want it

But you're a good girl

The way you grab me

Must wanna get nasty

Go ahead, get at me

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

[Robin Thicke:]

What do they make dreams for

When you got them jeans on

What do we need steam for

You the hottest bitch in this place

I feel so lucky,

You wanna hug me

What rhymes with hug me?

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

[Robin Thicke:]

OK, now he was close

Tried to domesticate you

But you're an animal

Baby, it's in your nature

Just let me liberate you

You don't need no papers

That man is not your maker

And that's why I'm gon' take a good girl

[Robin Thicke:]

I know you want it

I know you want it

I know you want it

You're a good girl

Can't let it get past me

You're far from plastic

Talk about getting blasted

I hate these blurred lines (I hate them lines)

I know you want it (I hate them lines)

I know you want it (I hate them lines)

I know you want it

But you're a good girl (good girl)

The way you grab me

Hustle gang homie

Must wanna get nasty

Leggo a say brah

Go ahead, get at me

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

[T.I.:]

One thing I ask of you

Lemme be the one you back that ass to

Come on from Malibu to Paris boo

Had a bitch, but she ain't bad as you

So, hit me up when you pass through

I'll give you something big enough to tear your ass in two

Swag on 'em even when you dress casual

I mean, it's almost unbearable

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

[T.I.:]

In a hundred years not dare would I

Pull a Pharcyde, let you pass me by

Nothin' like your last guy, he too square for you

He don't smack that ass and pull your hair like that

So I'm just watching and waitin'

For you to salute the true big pimpin'

Not many women can refuse this pimping

I'm a nice guy, but don't get confused, this pimpin'

[Robin Thicke:]

Shake your rump

Get down, get up

Do it like it hurt, like it hurt

What you don't like work

[Robin Thicke:]

Baby, can you breathe

I got this from Jamaica

It always works for me

Dakota to Decatur

No more pretending

'Cause now you're winning

Here's our beginning

I always wanted a good girl

[Robin Thicke:]

I know you want it

I know you want it

I know you want it

You're a good girl

Can't let it get past me

You're far from plastic alright

Talk about getting blasted

I hate these blurred lines

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

I know you want it

I know you want it

I know you want it

But you're a good girl

The way you grab me

Must wanna get nasty

Go ahead, get at me

[Pharrell:]

Everybody get up

[Pharrell & Robin Thicke:]

Everybody get up

Everybody get up
