Song Meaning of Too Good at Goodbyes by Sam Smith

In an interview Smith explained the breakup anthem's lyrics. He said: "This song is about a relationship I was in and it's basically about getting good at getting dumped. It's been a long while since I've put any music out and I feel that this first single sets the tone of what is to come".

He later commented what drove him to write this song "This song is - I'll be very open about it - it's about a relationship I was in in 2016. I basically got dumped about three times. And on the third time that everything ended, I had got so good at walking out the door that I kind of knew what to do, and I had a tick box in front of me of all the things I would do to get over this person."

The song reached number one in the UK and number four in the USA.

Too Good At Goodbyes lyrics by Sam Smith

You must think that I'm stupid

You must think that I'm a fool

You must think that I'm new to this

But I have seen this all before

I'm never gonna let you close to me

Even though you mean the most to me

'Cause every time I open up, it hurts

So I'm never gonna get too close to you

Even when I mean the most to you

In case you go and leave me in the dirt

But every time you hurt me, the less that I cry

And every time you leave me, the quicker these tears dry

And every time you walk out, the less I love you

Baby, we don't stand a chance, it's sad but it's true

I'm way too good at goodbyes

(I'm way too good at goodbyes)

I'm way too good at goodbyes

(I'm way too good at goodbyes)

I know you're thinking I'm heartless

I know you're thinking I'm cold

I'm just protecting my innocence

I'm just protecting my soul

No way that you'll see me cry

(No way that you'll see me cry)

I'm way too good at goodbyes

(I'm way too good at goodbyes)

No

No, no, no, no, no

(I'm way too good at goodbyes)

No, no, no, no
