Ring My Bell song meaning by Anita Ward
The song was originally composed as a teenybopper about kids conversing on the phone for eleven-year-old Stacy Lattisaw. Anita Ward, an American singer and musician, was requested to sing it instead after Lattisaw signed with a new company, and it ended up being her sole big hit.
The song's lyrics are about a woman urging her boyfriend to unwind with her after a demanding workday.
According to the 1984 book The Slanguage of Sex, the line "You can ring my bell" was considered sexually suggestive. It was stated that "'You can ring my bell any time you want to' would be regarded as a 'come-on' phrase in the US if used by a female," and that "songs like 'Ring My Bell' by Anita Ward caused scarcely a raised eyebrow in the '70s."
The song was featured on Billboard magazine's list of the 50 greatest songs ever. However, lyricist Frederick Knight claimed that he purposefully omitted any extremely suggestive words in order to present a polished picture for Ward.
The song "Ring My Bell" reached the top of the Billboard Hot 100 charts. Additionally, it peaked at the top of the UK Singles Chart. In addition, Ward was nominated for a 1980 Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance.
Ring My Bell lyrics by Anita Ward
I'm glad you're home
Now did you really miss me
I guess you did by the look in your eyes
(Look in your eyes, look in your eyes)
Well lay back and relax while I put away the dishes (put away the dishes)
Then you and me can rock-a-bye
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
The night is young and full of possibilities
Well come on, and let yourself be free
My love for you (love for you, love for you), so long I've been saving
Tonight was made for me and you
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my bell, you can ring my bell
Ding dong, ding dong, ring it
You can ring my bell, anytime, anyway
Ring it, ring it ring it, owww
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
You can ring my be-e-ell, ring my bell
