The ballad "If I Didn't Care" became one of the all-time best-selling singles and was a major smash. This is the first instance of the Ink Spots' "Top & Bottom" format that has been captured in a recording studio, with Jones playing the "talking bass" and Kenny singing lead. Each member of the group received $37.50 for this recording; however, Decca destroyed the original contract once the record sold 200,000 copies, and the group received an additional $3,750.

The "Top & Bottom" format became the Ink Spots' "trademark" with this song, which also gave the band international renown.
