Song Meaning of Hips Don't Lie by Shakira, and what it is about

Shakira and Wycleaf Jean wrote the lyrics and jointly composed the music with additional co-writing by Shakira's percussionist Archie Pena.

The song incorporates samples from "Amores Como el Nuestro" written by Alfanno, and "Carnaval (Baile En La Calle)" written by Días.

Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill, and Pras originally composed and recorded "Hips Don't Lie" for the Fugees reunion. The song was still called "Lips Don't Lie" at that point, but Hill never finished it.

"Hips Don't Lie" reimagines Wyclef Jean's 2004 song "Dance Like This" as a Latin song with a regaggeton beat.

Shakira revealed in an interview that the lyrics were motivated by her ability to judge a song's suitability for release by whether or not it makes her want to dance. She recalls telling her band members, "My hips don't lie! Are they moving? They're not moving! So this is not ready."

"Hips Don't Lie" became a global success, reaching number one in seventeen countries, including the U.S. Billboard 100.
